Days 4, 5, and 6: The Creation of living things before Humans

Then God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night. They will serve as signs for festivals [or for the appointed times] and for days and years. They will be lights in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth." And it was so. God made the two great lights -- the greater light to have dominion over the day and the lesser light to have dominion over the night -- as well as the stars. God placed them in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth, to dominate the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. Evening came and then morning: the fourth day.  Then God said, "Let the water swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." So God created the large sea-creatures and every living creature that moves and swarms in the water, according to their kinds. He also created every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. So God blessed them, "Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth." Evening came and then morning: the fifth day.  Then God said, "Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that crawl, and the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so. So God made the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and creatures that crawl on the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.   [Gen 1:14-25 HCSB]

God said:

  • "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night. They will serve as signs for festivals [or for the appointed times] and for days and years. They will be lights in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth."
  •  "Let the water swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."
  •  "Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth."
  • "Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that crawl, and the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds."

There is so much to be learned about God's character here! There are so many small treasures! Here are some of my treasures:

  • "They will serve as signs for festivals..." so God is planning parties already (lol)! Makes me want to listen to: God's Great Dance Floor or Wherever We Go. I love that God celebrates things, especially seasons.
  • An alternative translation for "festivals" here is "appointed times," and if you read throughout the rest of the Old Testament, God sets up festivals for the Israelites in every different season. He loves celebrations. He loves seasons. Read Ecclesiastes 3 Now!
  • "Let the water swarm with living creatures..." Ok, I know this is going to sound weird and dorky and teachery, but bear with me. This statement reminds me of my IB rubrics. The rubrics bold different terms for different levels of student accomplishment, with the lower levels bolding words like "minimally" or "partially," and the higher levels on the rubrics bold words like "thoroughly" and "in detail." I feel like if there was an IB rubric for creation, God was shooting for the higher levels... the levels that I put students on who "Excel." In God's creation work, He is an overachiever (Yes, I did just call God an overachiever, and no, I don't feel that it's blasphemous). He doesn't just want a few fish in the sea. He doesn't just create one or two types of whales or seaweed. He commands the waters to "swarm with living creatures." He is filling the waters to the brim with LIFE. He is making all of earth as VIBRANT as possible. Insert Vibrant Sea Life Pictures here :)Image result for Sea Life vibrantImage result for Sea Life vibrantImage result for Sea Life vibrant
Please, let me know what are you thinking about our Celebratory, Over-Achieving, Vibrant God? ;)

Marriage by Faith :)

Marriage By Faith (Different Parts written between 2010 and 2012) Part I Most of you who have stayed in contact with me know that the Lord has done a lot of purifying in my heart concerning the matter of marriage during the past two years. Two years ago, i was single, scared to death of a broken heart, and too stubborn and proud to give up my commitment to singleness, even when i felt like God was telling me to. Today, I am happily engaged to a man who is so perfect for me that I didn't know such a person could exist... and it's all thanks to my Creator (because he's the one who said 'It's not good for man to be alone'). The story is a very long one, and i don't often have a lot of free time, but I am going to try and write it out during the little free time that i do have... so please bear with me as it is a piece by piece process. Part II: Well, as i think about it, the best place to start is in my ninth grade Bible class. Mr V. (our Bible tea...

When God's heart remains a Mystery

"But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property. However, he kept back part of the proceeds with his wife’s knowledge, and brought a portion of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet. Then Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the proceeds from the field? Wasn’t it yours while you possessed it? And after it was sold, wasn’t it at your disposal? Why is it that you planned this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God! ” When he heard these words, Ananias dropped dead, and a great fear came on all who heard.  The young men got up, wrapped his body, carried him out, and buried him. There was an interval of about three hours; then his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. “Tell me,” Peter asked her, “did you sell the field for this price? ” “Yes,” she said, “for that price.” Then Peter said to...

Why this Blog Exists

Bible Study Blog Purpose: I have always loved Bible study… ever since I was a little girl. When I was little, I used to dream about the day when I would grow up so that I could go to church every night of the week and hear all the different pastors. That’s part of who I am. So, one big purpose of this blog is to continue pursuing that passion. My love of God has led me down some pretty adventurous paths in life, and there have been some pretty defining values concerning Bible Study that I have picked up along the way that I hope to reflect/implement in this blog: 1. After years of deliberate and honest study, questioning, discussion, and debate I have come  to the conclusion that I do believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God; however, for the purposes of this blog, I will refrain from participating in arguments about the Bible. I believe that the most effective way of deciding for yourself whether or not you believe it is God’s Word is to study it for yoursel...
